Custom Live Edge Mantel Issaquah

No two slabs of wood are the same, and that’s the whole point of a live edge mantel. The outline follows the tree, the grain tells its own story, and your fireplace ends up with a feature nobody else on the block has. Crafthammer Designs builds each custom live edge mantel in Issaquah by hand, selecting the wood with your room in mind and installing it so the supports disappear. We’ve been building in wood, steel, concrete, and stone since 2012.

Why a Slab Instead of a Plank

A standard mantel board is cut square and sanded flat, and it reads the same in every home. A live edge slab keeps the natural contour of the tree on one or both sides. That uneven line, along with knots, figure, and color shifts, makes the piece look grown rather than manufactured.

It also changes how a room feels. Issaquah homes often sit against green hillsides near Squak Mountain and Tiger Mountain, with big windows and a lot of timber outside. A live edge mantel echoes that landscape indoors, which is why it works so well in Issaquah Highlands, Talus, and the wooded neighborhoods around Olde Town.

Natural features such as knots, checks, and color changes are part of a slab’s character. We talk through which ones you want to feature and which should be stabilized or filled so they stay sound for years.

Pairing a live edge mantel with stone or iron

Wood looks even stronger beside other materials. A stone face behind a slab gives a mountain-lodge feel, while a smooth concrete wall suits a more modern room. Forged brackets add visible strength where you want it. If you’re considering stone, our page on a custom stone fireplace in Sammamish shows how we think about it, and the North Bend stone fireplace page covers more rustic builds. For a quieter look, the Issaquah concrete mantel page explains how we cast a mantel in place of wood. For the full range of options in town, see our fireplace design in Issaquah page.

How We Choose and Build Your Mantel

Good slab mantels start with selection, not cutting. We look for pieces with the right length, thickness, and character for your fireplace, and we talk through how much of the natural edge you want to keep.

  1. Measure the wall. Length, projection, and the height above the opening all affect how the mantel reads.
  2. Choose the slab. We match grain, color, and edge profile to your room and the finish of the floors and trim.
  3. Prepare and finish. The surface is smoothed and sealed so it looks natural without catching on a sleeve or snagging a candle.
  4. Install with hidden support. Strong mounting hardware sits inside or behind the slab, so the mantel appears to float.

What size mantel will my fireplace need?

Most mantels should extend beyond the opening on both sides, and a good rule is to let the proportions of the wall decide the rest. We sketch several lengths and thicknesses so you can see the difference before choosing.

Wood Near a Fire: What We Plan For

A wood mantel sits near heat, so safety shapes the design. Building code and the fireplace manufacturer’s listing set how close combustible material can sit to the opening and how far it can project into the room. We design every mantel around those limits and tell you early if the wall you have in mind needs adjusting.

Finishes that hold up near heat

We choose finishes suited to a spot beside a fire and sealed against everyday wear, so the surface stays smooth and the color stays true. We’ll explain how to care for it, too.

If you’re planning to hang a TV above the mantel, tell us. Heat rising from the firebox can affect electronics, and a deeper slab can help deflect it.

Caring for a live edge mantel

Wood moves with the seasons. Damp winters and dry, heated rooms mean a slab expands and contracts slightly through the year, and we choose and finish it with that in mind. Day to day, dust it, wipe spills quickly, and keep candles and decor from scratching the surface. We explain the care for your specific finish at installation.

Matching the slab to the wall

A dark slab against a pale wall makes a bold line, while a tone close to your floors makes the mantel feel like part of the room. We show sketches and finish options so you can compare, and we keep the grain direction and the natural edge facing the way that suits the room.

Issaquah Mantel Questions

A live edge mantel is cut from a slab of wood that keeps the tree's natural outline along one or both edges. Because the contour isn't trimmed square, each mantel has its own shape, grain, and character.
